Gareth became a Christian at age 17 after hearing the gospel for the first time through the ministry of Billy Graham. Reflecting on that pivotal moment, he says, “From that point, I didn't want to do anything else except serve the Lord by reaching others for Christ.”
Gareth has worked as a missionary in Africa and Central Asia. He worked as the UK Director of a British mission agency for 7 years before heading back to London in 2012 to become Deputy CEO of a Christian education charity. Gareth joined LCM in 2019 as the Field Director in East London, specialising in Children, Youth, and Schools ministry.
“Hudson Taylor said, ‘God is not looking for men of great faith, he is looking for common men to trust his great faithfulness,’ and this is a principle I live by,” Gareth continues.
In London today, we estimate just one in twenty children go to church, and around half don’t even have a Christian friend to invite them to church activities. And yet our experience shows that children are incredibly open to talking about Jesus Christ and exploring who he is. Gareth’s vision is for every school in London to have a Christian witness and for churches to be empowered to reach young people and children in their communities.
East London has some of the poorest areas in the country with a large population of young people and people from other faiths and backgrounds. Gareth collaborates with local churches to address people's needs while lovingly and sensitively sharing the Gospel.
"In Newham, we work with churches to not just meet people’s physical needs, but to share the hope we have in Christ. One of the ways we do this is by partnering with a church to operate a food pantry. Here we train volunteers to share the gospel with attendees from diverse backgrounds," he explains.
Gareth recalls an interaction with Lee, whom he met after speaking at a town centre church. "Lee shared his unhappiness with life, and I shared the gospel with him," Gareth recalls. "He was moved to tears, and we prayed together. The gospel holds the power of God for salvation."
Gareth is married to Helen, a GP, and they have five children. In his free time, he enjoys running, staying fit, and walking his dog, Blue.
