Matt's journey into full-time mission work was strongly influenced by his Christian upbringing and the mentorship of his missionary grandfather. After becoming a Christian at a young age and being baptised at 18, Matt felt a deep conviction to share the gospel, particularly after reading Brother Andrew's book, "God’s Smuggler." His experiences in sharing Christ's love with colleagues led him to pursue full-time mission work.
“I long that people would come and experience the transforming power of the good news of Jesus Christ, and live an abundant life in that,” says Matt, reflecting his passion for missions.
Currently, Matt serves as a missionary in Lewisham, an area grappling with significant challenges such as a high proportion of residents relying on out-of-work benefits. Matt's primary focus lies in reaching out to two specific groups: the senior and residents of council estates, who often feel overlooked and marginalised.
In his outreach efforts, Matt collaborates closely with local churches. He trains church members in street evangelism and door-to-door ministries. During home visits, Matt intentionally includes local church members, providing them with discipleship opportunities. This approach ensures the development of disciple-makers within the community, enabling sustained outreach efforts. It also enables a smooth integration for new believers into local churches, cultivating a sense of belonging and support within their own neighbourhoods.
One example of this was when Matt encountered Peter, during street preaching - a man who had drifted away from church but felt drawn back by God. Through prayer and sharing the gospel, Matt helped Peter reconnect with his faith. This encounter has encouraged the local church and shows the beginning of God's work in the community.
Matt's vision for Lewisham is to see people come to faith in Christ and the community flourish and change. He aims to help everyday Christians share the gospel effectively within their local community, especially with those living on council estates and seniors.
Living with his family, Matt enjoys staying active by going to the gym and walking his dog. His dedication to serving others and spreading Christ's love is evident in his work and personal life.
